Classic Advertising

Classic advertising tools on the web have corresponding tools in the real world. They each require their own skill, but most of all they require persistent application of effort.

They are:

  • Advertising through email
  • Pop-under advertising
  • Traffic Exchanges
  • Banners
  • Free Advertising
  • Classifieds in Ezines
  • Off-line activity

 Advertising through email

Here we aren’t covering your own email list. We’re talking about buying or renting lists and blasting out emails often in the millions.

Unsolicited Bulk Mail

Not a clever solution! These lists are often ‘harvested’ from all kinds of sources and then resold as safe lists. Another tem is ‘targeted bulk email.’  The rule is simple. If the target has not given permission for you to email them then it is spam and you risk complaints or legal action.  Spam is a VERY bad idea.

Opt-in Email Marketing

Here the recipient HAS requested information or given you permission to mail.  These are often lists collected for major direct mail advertisers that are resold. The person signing up agrees to receive email, often to get some other advantage – a free gift or access to a discount. Our guess is they sign up without really wanting the email flood knowing they can drop out later.  In our view, with huge lists you may always get someone, but in general they are not worth it unless your offer is hugely compelling.

Free Opt-In Lists

Few of these exist anymore and the level of actual readership is low. Take care, they may disappear under you

Paid Safe Lists

Here the lists tend to be more stable, but you have to pay to use them. There is less chance of being charged with spam as they are opt-in lists generally.   Very often with these lists you are advertising to marketers like yourself, which tends to lower the usefulness of the list

List Rental

Can be the most reputable and the most highly targeted. Typically these people will do extensive assessments of their list members so that they can sell access to the smallest market fragments.  These lists are opt-in and spam free.   In general, you won’t find a better list for your money. A great way to use these lists is to seek to build a customer relationship and transfer the users through to your own mailing list. For example, in this site we use such a list to encourage people to sign up for this newsletter.

Blast4Traffic.com  A bulk list that sends out to 2.3m people. We have used it with small success, but is a good example of its kind. Look also at:

Pop-under Advertising

This approach has your actual web-page appear as a pop-under when someone closes another web page. It looks 'natural'. Conversion rates are very low often below 1 in 10,000 impressions or even lower. But it can work for some offers.  Pop-under advertising is relatively expensive and has been heavily impacted by pop-up blockers, estimated to block up to 98% of ads - though that may be extreme!

Two services worth looking at are:

SubmitPro.us

Adminder.com

Traffic Exchanges

A Traffic Exchange is a 'club'. You join the club and look at other people's adverts. They in turn look at yours. The idea is mutual exposure. The jury is out on traffic exchanges, on whether they produce traffic or not. Luckily they are inexpensive to join and they occasionally turn up something you hadn't thought of before. However, be aware, the people you are advertising to on a traffic exchange are almost by definition other web entrepreneurs. If that is not your market, then the approach is useless to you.

Reputable services include:

TrafficSwarm.com

Brastart.com

EasyHits4U.com

HitHarvester.com

TrafficG.com

WebMasterQuest.com

The Leading Education on the Web

HBB Research searched long and hard for the programs it would recommend to and use with its offline students.

The two primary criteria were:

  • It must be well presented and written
  • It must be created by "practioners" with a verifiable track record of outstanding success
  • It must be sold at a reasonable price

Three levels of program have been selected so far.

The Core Training will be done using the Internet Marketing Center's...

"The Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on The Internet -- Version 2006"

This course provides a solid background of web marketing expertise, develped by people who have built a $60m business using the same techniques. At under $200, this is simply fantastic value

The Advanced Programs will use The Reese Report "Traffic Secrets" as the primary support tool.

John Reese is a phenomenon. He is one of a small group of internet pioneers (including Ken Evoy, Perry Marshall, and Cory Trudl) who are rounded business people.

John's Traffic Secrets is not low cost - it runs at $95 per month. But the value far outweighs the cost.

And the third...

Well we are currently looking at a remarkable program from Jimmy Brown. It is a monthly subscription program (currently $10 per month), that provides a whole host of tools and teaching - all included. What we have seen so far is remarkable.
