On the Web Women Rule. OK!

“It is my belief that marketing to women is at the “Tipping Point.”
Author conversation with Martha Barletta a leader in the field of Marketing to Women and close associate of Tom Peters (probably the top living business guru.)

This note is for men. Women already know all this!  Still you may find it interesting.

While I was writing this there was a startled headline in our local news media. It pointed out that (in Canada) in 30% of households, women were the primary breadwinners.  To stroke all those male egos, the various (male) TV commentators said they didn’t expect this trend to move very fast.

Hooey!  Hogwash! Rubbish!

In the US, it’s already rumored to exceed 50%.

And this is the tip of the iceberg. Women are on a roll!

Take these facts (from 2004 in North America and undoubtedly ALL exceeded now):

Women SPEND the money:

Women instigate, control or complete over 80% of all retail purchases

All consumer purchases 83%

Home furnishings 94%

Vacations 92%

New homes 91%

DIY projects 80%

Consumer electronics 51%

Cars 60% plus 30% of decisions they influence

New bank accounts 89%

Health care 80% but 99% of all decisions relating to family health

Women EARN or CONTROL the money:

The wage gap is closing by age group: Overall 76 cents on the dollar compared to their male counterparts. Women 25-34 earned 83 cents on the dollar; and young women 19-24 earned 89 cents. With wage parity legislation that guarantees and enforces equal pay for equal work, this remaining disparity comes from women doing more part-time work and taking more time out of the formal workforce to have children. Trends indicate that the part time (and contingent work) and time out of the force for children are increasingly decisions women are taking of their own volition. This implies that for all intents and purposes young women earn the same as men. Indeed, in Canada in younger ages the wage gap is closed. In older ages women out earn men statistically.

The bottom line of the above data is that between 1970 and 1998 female median income rose 63% male 0.6% as a result of pay equity and the destruction of high paying, unionized male jobs plus early retirement that put expensive men out to grass at 55 and made them Wal-Mart greeters. Family income in real terms grew solely because of increasing female employment and income.  The trend is continuing as women get more educated and take on the better earning jobs.

Women take at least 29% of financial decisions alone. A study by Prudential Insurance shows almost total female involvement in a domain thought the preserve of men. They

Write 80% of checks

Pay 61% of bills

Own 53% of all stocks

Influence 75% of financial decisions

Women constitute 43% of those with net worth over 1/2 million dollars and think of all those boomer widows coming up! Remember, the baby boomers control 70% of all assets and women will inherit. Indeed, on average, these women will be widowed at 67, and will most likely survive their husbands by at least 6 and as much as 15-18 years. During this time they have sole control of the household’s assets. And there’s more. They will be the youngest, healthiest, wealthiest, best-educated, most ambitious group of retirees ever and (swallow this) we already know they outspend young women per capita and in total

Women-owned businesses (10 million in the US), employ over 30 million people and have revenue bigger than the GDP of Germany. Women are opening new business at five times the rate of men.

27% of household heads (census term not reality statement) are women, singles, single mothers, plus lesbian households

Women’s investor groups outperform male investor groups significantly

Women are going to OVERWHELM men economically in the upcoming generation:

There is a rising disparity between men and women attending college Women are in growing majority at all levels...

In the USA: by 2010 female:male ratio in bachelor degrees will be 1.42:1. In Masters degrees the ratio will be 1.51:1 in US.  Women are already in a majority in math and sciences education.  And they perform better, with more girls in honor societies than boys. A small indication but: girls read more and girls outperform boys in art and music

In Canada: Business school attendance by 2001 was 38% women, Medical schools 46%, and Law schools 49% women (New York Times, 3/26/01), Pharmacy 60+ women, Accountancy 60%, health and education overwhelmingly female. All we know is that these numbers have increased since.

Women are starting to dominate the professions: teaching is almost totally feminized – the people who will form the views of the next generation. Health care, law, accounting, consulting, management all are going female (indeed, girls are far better suited to modern organization theory (cooperative, team-based) than boys

Men still dominate engineering and computers and have the more dangerous jobs (with more physical injuries.).

And, finally, women already DOMINATE commerce on the web:

By 2000 more women used the web than men, and 6 out of 10 new web users

Girls are bigger users of web for relationships and info gathering than boys.

Women constitute over 50% of all corporate purchasing officers, are in a majority in HR and commercial admin officers with attendant purchasing power. With organizations increasingly buying on the web…well!

With women opening businesses at five times the rate of men and the web being a primary business tool for small entrepreneurs, it doesn’t take a big leap to see women as driving the web home-business boom.

Have you got the message yet?

In North America we are moving at incredible speed to a feminized society.

Let me be even clearer.

IF YOU WANT TO SELL SOMETHING ON THE WEB A WOMAN IS VERY LIKELY THE CUSTOMER

If you accept the above statement, then the corollary is true. If you want to sell to women YOU HAD BETTER KNOW HOW THEY SHOP!
