Concluding Thoughts

Or Write a Book!!

So you've really got the writing bit between your teeth and now you'd like to write a BOOK! And sell it through agents and publishers.

But writing a book is very different from writing an article. Writing 60,000 words is a different proposition from a 750 word article. Or is it?

What you need is a system. One that will allow you to pick away 750 words at a time until you have strung together a coherent book.

Writing for Traffic (cont'd)

Knowledge Base

Newsletters have a close cousin (often incorrectly called newsletters) that is in fact a knowledge base. Knowledge bases are very heavily used by professional organizations for capturing knowledge from their practioners. For example, a consultant or engineer has been asked to solve a particular problem. She does so and in the process learns a lot about how to solve that particular kind of problem. Now her company is global but her knowledge is locked in her head. A solution is the knowledge base where she puts down the problem and its solution in a structured way. Typically such knowledge bases are structured and searchable so that others can find her ideas when they need them.

Knowledge bases are very powerful tools though they take a surprising amount of managing to be effective inside an organization.

From an advertising point of view you can create a knowledge base by developing a series of articles on different subject areas making them searchable and interactive (using survey tools and blogging techniques.)  At its thinnest, the knowledge base is a one way presentation of knowledge. At its richest it could be a global project for developing knowledge and capturing it in easy to access form.  In between the knowledge base could be your Frequently Asked Questions space.

Blogs

A blog (also known as weblog) is commentary or stream of consciousness on whatever subject you happen to want to talk about. It could be a variant on a newsletter, full of new ideas and reports of discoveries you have made; or of your observations on the nature of Life!  It could even be your personal diary.

Blogging today is automated (see Google’s Blogger.com), and it offers real marketing potential, partly because they can be made interactive with the readers able to add their comments (that you can edit!)  This interactivity converts the one-way blog into a multi-person discussion forum. A blog can stand alone or you can integrate it with other marketing tools, such as a newsletter or a knowledge base making them interactive. These combinations change a simple static document into a searchable event available to be spidered by the search engines and syndicated.

Blogging software is amazingly easy to use. Try it at Google’s Blogger.com and you will be up on the web in minutes.  However, if you intend to use the blog in the long term, it needs to be planned out. You need to ask the traditional questions. Why am I doing this? Who will use it? What do I want them to get out of it? Why should they come or care? How do they access it? What will the content be? How often will I post to it? And so on.

Perhaps the toughest question is; who is going to run it?  It is not uncommon for blogs (like newsletters) to get started then die off miserably as the webmaster runs out of time, energy and interest. The web is littered with these tag ends of bright ideas.  If you are an organization, you can allocate someone to do it. If not then you either have to submit to the tyranny of regular updating or you must find some third party who would like to do it for you.

Viral E-Books

E-books or electronic books are self-contained files usually in PDF

Format and read using Adobe Reader. They can be static, just like a physical book, or they can be filled with all the toys of the web – hyperlinks, internal search engines, graphics, animation, pictures, survey or questionnaire tools and so on.  You can think of them as book-length articles. Now not all e-books are large, many are short, but the format is very flexible and easy to use.

Like anything written for the web, the key is the content. It has to be interesting, valuable and well written. If the book meets these criteria you are 80% of the way to success.

Creating an e-book is not complicated. At its simplest you create a document in Word, say, convert it to PDF, set up a download on your web site and you are away. If you want something a little richer you should think about compilers, again go to Adobe.com but you can also try viralPDF at ViralPDF.com.

E-books are typically written for sale. But they can become truly viral if you give them away. The best example is Dotcomology from Plug-in-Profits. It is given away through affiliates and represents an excellent source of knowledge on web marketing.  The twist that has been added is the ‘rebranding’ concept. Under rebranding affiliate links etc embedded in the document are converted to the links under the name of the affiliate. So in Dotcomology, Stone Evans’ links are replaced by ones that favor the affiliate.  This ensures that the affiliate has a real interest in distributing the document.

Refer-a-Friend Scripts

These are not worth the effort

Text Links: The Special case

If you understand the logic of linking to drive up your search engine ranking then you understand ‘text links’. Text lines are fragments of text that appear to be part of the natural flow of the site content. When people click on them they are taken to the advertiser’s destination.  The real kicker in text links is that they are inbound links. Inbound links without a reciprocating outbound link. The search engines love solitary inbound links as evidence that the site is considered valuable by others. You therefore get a double hit, an ad plus an inbound link.

Interestingly, the text link companies focus almost exclusively on this search engine effect, which implies that text links are not such great direct sales tools!

There are numerous text link companies on the web. Type “text link” into Google and find the top ones.

It is always a concern when a tool has its value from a distortion in the market, in this case the tricking of the search engines. One assumes that at some point Google and others will find a way of dampening this technique. Meanwhile, it works, still!

Concluding Remarks

Nothing works as well as writing as a vehicle for driving long term wealth on the internet. Its impact on viral marketing, links, search engines, email list creation, and customer loyalty is huge. Writing for traffic is one of the top skills you can develop.

That is not to say that you shouldignore allothertechniques - far from it. But writing for traffic is immensely effective and cumulative.

Well worth the effort!

Example Viral Book

Viral books are created for a reason - typically to drive the commercial interests or reputation of the writer. The objective is to get the books dispersed across the web by mixing genuinely interesting content with back links to the writer's site.

More sophisticated is to allow the person distributing the book to partially or completey rebrand the book with their links - so they get the traffic.
